Radio Journalist Shot in the Philippines

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) demands the immediate arrest of a gunman who shot radio commentator Pablo Casañada in Quezon City in the Philippines on July 5.

Casañada, who works as a commentator for dzLT-AM radio station in Sariaya Town under the name Bill Tesalona, was shot once while at his home with friends about 5.45pm. He suffered minor injuries to his face and chest, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) reports.

The suspected gunman was reportedly chased and caught by Casañada’s friends.

Sariaya police chief Superintendent Danilo Morzo told the NUJP, an IFJ affiliate, that initial inquiries indicated the attack was not related to Tesalona’s work as a journalist.

Tesalona reportedly said he did not know the suspect, whose name is known to police, and did not know why he would be a target.

The IFJ joins the NUJP in calling on the Philippines authorities to ensure that the attacker is arrested and charged to prevent repeat attacks on other journalists and citizens.
