Pakistani Investigative Journalist Murdered in Sindh Province

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is outraged at the murder of a veteran reporter and investigative journalist, Zubair Ahmed Mujahid, in Pakistan on November 23.

According to local media reports, Mr Mujahid was killed instantly when an unidentified gunman on a motorcycle shot him in the stomach in Mirpur Khas in the southern province of Sindh.

A correspondent for the national daily Jang, Mr Mujahid wrote a weekly column on “Crime and Punishment” and often reported on the mistreatment of the poor by local authorities and landowners in Mirpur Khas.

His elder brother is reported as saying Mr Mujahid was “killed because of his articles criticising the situation of the poor” in the area.

Mr Mujahid is the seventh Pakistani journalist to be killed in 2007.

“It is a courageous job for journalists to report on human rights abuses and corruption by people in positions of authority and Mujahid should be admired for his work,” said IFJ Asia Pacific Director Jacqueline Park.

“The perpetrators must be punished and learn that silencing journalists with violence is criminal and will not be tolerated.”
