IFJ Launches 2003 Journalism for Tolerance Prize in Central and Western Africa

On 30 December, the IFJ launched the Central and Western African edition of the 2003 Journalism for Tolerance Prize at a ceremony under the title "Tolerance in the language of the media" organised at the Press House in Lome, Togo. The ceremony was presided over by the representative of the European Commission's delegation in Lome in the presence of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and the General Co-ordinator of the IFJ Africa office.

The IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize is about promoting tolerance, combating racism and discrimination and contributing to an understanding of cultural, religious and ethnic differences.

The Prize is an annual competition among journalists from all media sectors with a simple objective: to promote better understanding among journalists from all communities of the importance of tolerance and defence of human rights, particularly when it comes to reporting on minorities.

The Prize rewards individuals and their work, setting benchmarks on how to tackle discrimination in whatever forms it comes - whether on the basis of language, religion for belief, or ethnic origin.

In Central and Western Africa one winner will be selected in each of the following three categories: print/online, radio and television. Each winner will receive a financial award of 1,000 EUR. All winners and nominees will be invited to attend a special prizegiving ceremony in mid 2004.

Entries submitted to the 2003 IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize must have been published or broadcast between 01 January 2003 and 31 December 2003. The deadline for entries is 27 February 2004. The entry form and further information about the Prize is available on-line at www.ifj.org
