The IFJ’s China media freedom projects have provided a key ongoing monitoring and advocacy voice for journalists and media workers in China as well as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan since 2008. The IFJ is looking for a part-time coordinator, fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin, to undertake the IFJ’s China and East Asia monitoring and advocacy through to March 2021.

Key qualities:

  • Strong journalism and/or international media/advocacy experience essential
  • Expertise/knowledge of current China and East Asia political and media landscape and key press freedom issues
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal in English and Chinese (traditional and simplified)
  • Strong digital security skills and secure communications practice

Tasks and responsibilities:

Working under the direction of the Director of the IFJ Asia-Pacific, you will be responsible for all media monitoring, communications and media support activities related to the IFJ’s China project work in East Asia with a focus on Mainland China and Hong Kong including:

  • Issuing regular IFJ media alerts, statements, bulletins and mapping of media violations in China and Hong Kong and provide translations;
  • Monitoring of violations in the region to ensure up-to-date understanding of developing situations and issues;
  • Development of a network of monitoring activists in the region to build engagement on China media issues and ongoing weekly maintenance of IFJ’s China media alerts system;
  • Production of bi-monthly bulletins documenting press freedom violations and key issues for the region;
  • Conduct campaigns around specific issues or cases, including letter writing campaigns and lobbying where appropriate.
  • Liaise with IFJ and its affiliates in developing and building network engagement on China media issues globally;
  • Cultivate IFJ’s global stakeholder engagement in the development of a China media strategy;
  • Establish links with technical, digital security experts and other experts to support technical aspects and training:
  • Conduct risk assessments for activities to ensure that safety of stakeholders, journalists and activists;
  • Produce narrative reports on activities conducted, including fact-finding trips, conference, overseas missions, workshops etc as well as assistance in preparation of financial reports;
  • Maintain and augment IFJ press freedom network of journalists in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
  • Provide inputs for project development and strategic advice for future works;
  • Build relationship with press freedom organisations and advocacy groups to investigate possible campaigns and activities on which to collaborate.

Pakistan Project Coordinator

Position: Pakistan Project Coordinator

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is looking for a Pakistan Project Coordinator for the IFJ Asia-Pacific Regional Office – to work on a media development project supporting labour rights, gender equality and freedom of association in Pakistan’s media. The Project Coordinator will coordinate and manage the implementation of an IFJ project in Pakistan that will strengthen the capacity of journalists and journalist representative organisations to protect and defend the labour and professional rights of journalists. The project will also work to improve the capacity of women journalists in Pakistan through active participation in unions and press clubs and support collaborative efforts to improve the situation for women in mainstream, freelance, contract and entrepreneurial media. 

The Project Coordinator will work under the supervision and direction of the Director of the IFJ Asia-Pacific together with the IFJ’s Pakistan affiliate, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), and other in-country project partners.

The ideal candidate should have:
•    Strong skills in project management, research coordination, training delivery, monitoring/evaluation and financial management.
•    Demonstrated knowledge and experience with issues impacting press freedom, media rights monitoring, labour rights and gender equity.
•    Understanding of digital rights and security issues and geopolitical challenges in Pakistan with the ability to analyse and relate these to press freedom.
Tasks and responsibilities: 
The Project Coordinator will be responsible for all activities related to the project and specifically to:
•    Oversee the management and successful implementation of the Pakistan project in line with project actions; and take a country lead on monitoring, reporting and communications to ensure that activities are completed on time and in line with donor requirements. 
•    Establish networks with key stakeholders including media, civil society groups and authorities to ensure that implementation is responsive to the needs of partners and beneficiaries. 
•    Design, plan and implement the project activities, including the formation and operationalization of a project steering committee and a gender expert group, as well as coordinate with locally-engaged experts.
•    Manage virtual and physical trainings, meetings and seminars  on institutional strengthening, gender equity in media, labor rights of media workers, and digital organizing. 
•    Facilitate, in conjunction with IFJ experts, the development of training resources tailored to project goals in Pakistan, in conjunction with IFJ goals and principles. 
•    Coordinate pilot research projects on media/labour issues, digital media work, gender equity and future organizing strategies. 
•    Oversee and implement capacity building and institutional evaluations of project partners including journalist unions, press clubs and women’s CSOs
•    Manage financial operations of the project, including budget planning and financial reporting and regularly report to the IFJ to ensure that the project activities meet the organizational financial and administrative compliances.
•    Draft high quality periodic reports to donor timelines and requirements as well as activity reports and resource materials including change stories, best practices and responses from project beneficiaries.
•    Prepare briefing papers, presentations, regular media releases in media and press freedom issues as well as manage social media and website content on the SAMSN Digital Hub. 
•    Report, monitor and map press freedom and labour rights violations and attacks on media workers in Pakistan and also produce reports on critical issues.
•    Work with the IFJ’s South Asia Coordinator and AP Director to contribute to strengthen and build the IFJ and its trade union network and support press freedom and freedom of expression network in Pakistan – including contributions to the monthly South Asia Bulletin.

Selection Criteria:
•    Minimum two years’ experience in project management, development communications and proven ability to independently manage programs.
•    A minimum of five years of experience in media and/or trade unions and/or development work.
•    Excellent communication skills including high proficiency and fluency in English and local language (written, verbal, reading).
•    Proficiency in MS office, management of budgets and Excel.
•    Proven ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines, manage project finances, budget preparation and financial reports.

Desirable skills:
•    Ability to develop training resources and deliver training on organisational development, trade union capacity-building, press freedom and human rights.
•    Ability to proactively develop IFJ relationships and contacts with funding agencies and other organisations, along with identifying funding opportunities and writing proposals for funding.
•    Excellent analytical skills with ability to detect and report inconsistencies
•    Excellent organizational skills with great attention to detail
•    Ethical conduct in accordance with recognized professional and organizational codes of ethics
•    Proactive, resourceful, solutions oriented and results-oriented

Internship in Communication and Campaigns Department

The internship is opened for a period of  2 to 4months depending on the availability of the candidates.
