Media watchdog groups will debate the impact of globalisation and ownership regulation at a panel discussion hosted by The International Federation of Journalists on February 20 at 6 pm.
The keynote speaker will be US expert Andrew Schwartzman, who led a huge public protest against media deregulation in the United States in 2003.
Speakers from the US, Europe and South Africa will discuss globalisation and the effects of media ownership concentration on media quality, freedom of expression and workers rights around the world.
The panel discussion will be on Monday, February 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Polak Room of the Residence Palace.
After the presentation by speakers, attendees will have a chance to ask questions.
The presentation will be followed by a reception in the Residence Palace.
Panellists:
- Andrew Schwartzman was the lead lawyer in the US campaign that successfully fought an attempt by the government to further deregulate media ownership in the US. He is the head of the Media Access Project, a public-interest law firm that represents civil society groups on FCC-related issues.
- Granville Williams is the editor of Free Press, the newspaper of the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom (CPBF). The CPBF is an independent pressure group campaigning for democratic and free media in the United Kingdom.
- Jane Duncan is the Executive Director of the Freedom of eXpression Institute (FXI) in South Africa. FXI was established in 1994 to protect and foster the rights to freedom of expression and access to information, and to oppose censorship.
