The IFJ and the EFJ welcome the hundred years of the FNSI

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) welcome today the centennial celebration of the Federazione Nazionale della Stampa Italiana (FNSI).

The history of the FNSI shows the importance of journalists' long struggle to protect and promote plurality, press freedom and the public's right to know. Under various circumstances, it has shown how workers united in solidarity can resist the pressures coming from economic and political powers that have threatened the media industry.

Through the victories and challenges in their 100-year history, the FNSI provides media professionals in Europe and all over the world a model of how to create a long-term union movement and sustain it even as social and technical changes raise doubts about the future.

The unity of the FNSI is not only an example for others. For Italian journalists it is the first line of defence in protecting their rights and the public's right of freedom of information.

The IFJ represents over 600,000 journalists in 120 countries worldwide
The EFJ represents over 250,000 journalists in over 30 countries.
