IFJ Calls for Investigation Into Death Threats Against Magazine Editor in the Philippines

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called on the Philippine Government to investigate a death threat received by the managing editor of Newsbreak magazine.

The Philippines continues to be one of the most dangerous and threatening countries for journalists, with six journalists killed this year.

IFJ President, Christopher Warren said the Government must stand up for journalist's rights and investigate the threat.

"Considering the terrible record of ruthless and deadly attacks against journalists in the Philippines, the Government must recognise the seriousness of death threats against journalists and investigate these incidents," said the IFJ President.

"If the Government ignores these threats, it will be sending these criminals a message of impunity. The Government must put an end to the current environment of intimidation and violence, and take action against these criminals," said Warren.

The IFJ, the organisation representing more than 500,000 journalists in more than 110 countries, condemns any actions which threaten the freedom and independence of the media.
