On February 1, Myanmar’s military detained over 45 politicians and activists, including state counsellor Suu Kyi and president Myint, declaring a state of emergency for at least one year. Soon after the military takeover, phone lines were cut and internet access was heavily impacted, almost immediately serving to undermine the capacity of journalists and media personnel to cover the unfolding political crisis.
Journalists’ killings - masterminds are walking free
Threatened, attacked, beaten, imprisoned and killed, many journalists pay with their lives every year for their commitment to freedom of information and democracy. The IFJ #EndImpunity campaign urges governments to put an end to impunity for crimes against journalits and denounces the crimes that remain unpunished while the masterminds walk free.

In the last 5 years hundreds of journalists have been killed. Nine in 10 cases remain unpunished. Impunity reigns. Journalists are imprisoned attacked, beaten, detained and threatened on a daily basis. This – and a growing frustration with a lack of action to tackle impunity - has driven the IFJ to campaign for an United Nations Convention dedicated to the protection of journalists and media professionals.

Stop violence against women journalists - for an ILO Convention!
Gender-based violence is one of the most prevalent and tolerated human rights violations in the world. The IFJ is standing alongside the Global Trade Union Movement in taking action to end gender-based violence at work and campaigning for a new ILO convention to tackle the various forms of gender-based violence that occur in the world of work.
More and more media organisations are using rights-grabbing contracts which undermine freelance rights and pay. The IFJ in partnership with the European Federation of Journalists has launched a worldwide campaign against such contracts and to demand a fair share for journalists.

The virtual world mirrors the ‘real’ world, where women journalists are harassed, excluded and subjected to abuse for their work, undermining their right to express themselves in the digital space without repercussions. The IFJ-led campaign, involving unions and press freedom organisations, calls for strong action to stop cyber-bullying and online harassment of women journalists.
