World Press Freedom Day initiatives around the world

Check out the activities the IFJ and its affiliates are carrying out to mark this year's World Press Freedom Day

Australia

The MEAA, along with the IFJ AP and the Walkley Foundation will host the annual Opens external link in new windowPress Freedom Dinner on May 6. The event is important to raise much-needed funds for the Media Safety & Solidarity Fund (MSSF) which supports activities across the Asia-Pacific.

Burkina Faso

AJB organises a football tournament for media professionals on May 2 and a panel discussion on May 3 on the topic "la presse burkinabè face au renouveau démocratique".

Cambodia

CAPJ, with UNESCO's office in Cambodia and other local press associations, will hold a meeting on the theme "Access to Information legislation in Cambodia". The meeting will be attended by 100 participants from various media organisations.

Cameroon

SNJC organises several events throughout the country to mark the day, including seminars, sports activities, and the main event on the 3 May where the declarations will be read.

Colombia

FECOLPER organises a regional meeting of journalists and media workers called “Garantías para la libertad de prensa en contextos de violencia, impunidad y temor” that will take place on 2 and 3 May in Medellin, Colombia.

Djibouti

SPAD organises a ceremony under the theme "freedom of information as a fundamental human right".

France

SNJ, SNJ-CGT and CFDT sent a Initiates file downloadjoint letter to the Israeli Ambassador demanding the immediate release of Palestinian journalist Omar Nazzal. 

Gambia

Gambia Press Union holds a lecture on free expression and Award Ceremony to reward hard-working journalists.

Germany

DJV organises an Opens external link in new windowevent on “free coverage” in Würzburg on 3 May.

Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Journalists Association posted a Opens external link in new windowmessage together with a video on Facebook asking the Chief Executive to fulfill his election promises to uphold press freedom in the country and work for a more open government.

India

UNESCO will host an event to launch the South Asia Press Freedom report with a selfie competition. More information on the competition is available Opens external link in new windowhere.

Indonesia

A large two-day event is being held to discuss online journalism and press freedom.

Nepal

FNJ organises its Annual General Meeting on the World Press Freedom Day on 3 May. Over 1,700 of its central council members along with other invitees and observers will meet under one roof, discussing on different issues including the situation of press freedom in Nepal. FNJ also launches the "Press Freedom Report 2016", with all the details of press freedom violation in Nepal in 2016.

New Zealand

E tu holds its annual press freedom debate to raise money for the Media Safety and Solidarity Fund.

Pakistan

PFUJ organises different activities on the World Press Freedom Day. Seminars will be held at four provincial head quarters Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta. Federal Minister information Mr. Pervaiz Rasheed will be the chief guest at Lahore seminar presided by the PFUJ President Rana Muhammad Azeem. Awards to senior journalists will be given for their efforts made for freedom of press. A torch rally will also be held in the evening to mark the day on May 3.

Peru

ANP organises two activities on 3 May to mark the day: "Prensentación del balance de agresiones a los periodistas y trabajadores de los medios del primer trimestre del año" and "Plantón en solidaridad con periodista Rafo León ante lectura de sentencia en querella por difamación y solidaridad con periodistas perseguidos judicialmente".

Romania

On 3 May Romanian Journalists Union MediaSind launches ReStart, a project inspired by the concept of The Ethical Journalism Initiative promoted by the International Federation of Journalists, project that is aimed at students from Romanian universities that want to get involved in promoting quality journalism.

Russia

RUJ, together with the UN Information Center in Russia and the High Commissioner for Human Rights office in Moscow had a round table discussion at the Moscow Journalist House to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day.

Sri Lanka

FMM will mark WPFD under the theme of An independent media regulatory commission: towards a free and socially responsible media. The event will be held on May 4.

Sudan

The Sudanese Journalists’ union marks WPFD on May 3 in its headquaters. National seminar and a workshop are organised in cooperation with the UNESCO office in Sudan. The event will also pay tribute to journalistic works promoting media freedom in the country.

Switzerland

impressum publishes a report on the state of press freedom in Switzerland in 2015.

Thailand

NUJT and TJA will celebrate WPFD with a one day event "What do the people get from press freedom?" The event is being organised to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom.

Timor Leste

The new Press Council members will be sworn in, and the IFJ, AJTL and TLPU will host a half-day workshop on press freedom and criminal defamation.

Uruguay

On 3 May, Asociación de la Prensa Uruguaya (APU) will present, together with Centro de Archivo and Acceso a la Información Pública, a Opens external link in new windowreport in the capital, Montevideo, on freedom of expression in Uruguay. It exposes several violations on press freedom between the 3 May 2015 and the 3 May 2016.

Vanuatu

Media Association blong Vanuatu will host a one-day event – Your Right to Information that saves lives. The event will be held on World Press Freedom Day and aims to highlight the importance of RTI and include a training component for local journalists.
