IFJ Calls for Urgent Action over Massacre of Philippine Journalists
The IFJ has called for the international community to intervene to demand a full investigation to bring to justice those responsible for the biggest single massacre of working journalists in recent history.
The IFJ call came after at least twelve journalists were murdered when a political convoy of over 36 persons was ambushed and slaughtered by gunmen in the Maguindanao province of Southern Philippines.
“This is an event which shocks journalists around the world to the core,’ said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary. “We need a strong and urgent response from the Philippine government and the international community.”
The political convoy was led by Genalyn Tiamzon-Mangudadatu, who was on her way to file her husband’s nomination as a candidate for the forthcoming election for governor of Maguindanao province. Journalists were part of the convoy along with several members of her family.
The convoy was ambushed Monday morning by around 100 armed men, who took them to a remote location before massacring them all. Most were shot; some were beheaded and driven over by vehicles.
According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) among the victims were at least 12 journalists covering the political development who were accompanying the political convoy.
This is the darkest day in the history of journalism in the Philippines, which, outside of Iraq, has topped the tables of countries where journalists are most at risk in recent years.

PACE Condemns Massacre in Maguindanao. Calls for Urgent Action. The Philippine Association of Communication Educators Foundation Incorporated (PACE), the largest and oldest professional organization of communication and media educators and practitioners in the country denounces in the strongest possible terms the brazen massacre of civilians and journalists in Maguindanao. This incident is the single largest politically motivated crime and massacre of journalists in Philippine history. This cowardly and bastardly atrocity has no place in society. PACE calls on the Government of the Republic of the Philippines to act swiftly and decisively to bring the perpetrators of this crime to the bar of justice. PACE is very concerned that the killing of journalists has serious repercussions on press freedom for it sends a chilling effect to those covering highly sensitive beats. Although some members of the press felled, we at PACE will continue the fight as practitioners and mentors to future media practitioners to use media to expose wrongdoings of the powerful and seek redress in governance. PACE requests its membership nationwide to organize public discussions and activities and if possible stage public demonstrations to show our disgust at such inhumane act perpetrated by forces that know no civility or propriety. PACE also urges its members in all higher education institutions to communicate to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to demand a thorough and expeditious investigation and resolution of this crime. PACE also appeals to the international donor community to withhold its development assistance in this area as this has been used by scrupulous politicians for other purposes. PACE joins the local and international community in expressing its outrage at the nature of this crime and urges all citizens to pray for justice for the victims, for a violence-free resolution and for a truly meaningful and lasting peace in Mindanao and in other conflict areas. Justice for the victims of the Massacre in Maguindanao! Stop killing journalists!

It just goes to show how poweful the written word is and no one is going to stop it. My prayers go out to the families and co-workers who will keep up the fight.

We may say myself as a trible person who adores pens and the thought "Pen is mighter than the sword". The power of pen be united otherwise the world will be left with nothing else than barbarism and demons and devils.
