Gaza Journalists Solidarity Campaign

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) launched the Gaza Journalists Solidarity Campaign on 12 January as a response to numerous attacks by Israeli military targeting journalists and media equipment and installations during the recent conflict in Gaza. Five journalists were reported killed as a direct result of Israeli during the conflict. Media equipment and facilities have been targeted and destroyed.

The IFJ called at the launch of the campaign on the United Nations to  investigate and take actions over the media crisis and the targeting of journalists in a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban K-Moon.

In addition, the IFJ proposed to set up a support group in defence of journalists in Gaza - Gaza Journalists Defence Committee - which will promote fresh solidarity actions, including sending humanitarian assistance to our colleagues on the ground, and which will call for investigation of all violations of international humanitarian law, especially the right to protection for journalists as enshrined in Security Council Resolution 1738 of 23 December 2006.

The IFJ has begun sending urgent material to colleagues in Gaza to increase their safety. Thirteen flak jackets have been donated to journalists and the IFJ has committed 10.000 euro towards meeting various needs of colleagues in the Gaza Strip.

Donations to the Safety Fund effort to help provide further humanitarian aid to the victims of violence will be further appreciated. Please send these to:
