Solidarity with Strikes in Greek Media

Journalists throughout Greece are to go on two successive 48-hour strikes beginning today, 7 April, the longest industrial action taken by the sector in recent years.

The strike is declared by the Panhellenic Federation of Journalists' Unions (POESY) - joined by the country's radio and TV workers' unions and EFJ/IFJ affiliates, the Journalists' Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (JUADN) and the Journalists' Union of Macedonia and Thrace (ESIEMTH)-, battling against pension and labor rights' violations, unjustified pay cuts and mounting job losses.

Journalists in Greece ask colleagues in Europe and all over the world to support their struggle for:
·         Signature of adequate collective agreements
·         Stop salary cuts
·         Defend work benefits and rights
·         Stop work lay-offs
·         The renewal of a collective agreement (effective as of the year 2009) at the public broadcaster ERT
·         The protection of labor and pension rights of all media workers in all media outlets. All layoff schemes should be abandoned and all job positions should be maintained
·         The provision of labor and pension rights for those journalists who are working for online media.

The union are determined not to fall back on their just demands.  Journalists and media workers will be on strike all over Greece, in two consecutive 48 hour all media strikes. The first strike started on Thursday 7 April at 6 am - ending on Saturday 9 April at 6 am, and will be immediately followed by the second strike, which will end on Monday 11 April at 6 am.

The EFJ calls its affiliates to support Greek Journalists and media workers in this confrontation with employers to secure labour rights and professional dignity.
