IFJ Unions Stand Up for Journalism
This week the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is holding its annual
global days of action to promote journalists rights and protest the dramatic
crisis facing journalists suffering from excessive commercialization, political
pressure, falling standards, poor working conditions and violent attacks around
the world. The events will also be a celebration of the crucial role played by
journalists' unions for the promotion of quality journalism.
In Brussels,
journalists can show their support by coming to a group photo with the
International Federation of Journalists, the European Federation of
Journalists, the Belgian Journalists' Association, the European Journalism
Centre, International Press Association, National Union of Journalists-Brussels
Branch
On November 5-- and throughout the week of November 3 to November 7-- journalists will hold protest
actions, parties, demonstrations and union rallies at national and local level
to highlight key areas of concern and campaigns for IFJ affiliates including
work -demands for decent salaries and employment rights; campaigns for quality,
independent and ethical journalism; and international solidarity actions
against impunity for killers of journalists. Every union, every branch and
every workplace will be encouraged to organise an event linking journalists
across the globe.
The Stand Up
for Journalism campaign highlights both a social and professional crisis in
modern journalism.
By standing up for their rights journalists are also standing up for civil
liberties and fundamental human rights. Today's action is also an appeal to
other workers, to every group in civil society, and to the political community
at large.
